Hayling Island 2016

                                        HAYLING ISLAND - 19th APRIL 2016

Once again the weather Gods were kind finishing the day with blue skies and a sea breeze across the links. It was the 5th year the spring event was held at Hayling, with an odd number of pairs with 22 players requiring one pair to play as a 2-ball.

The morning play was over 18 holes with the usual format of first 4 holes of each 9 played as better ball, with the last 5 holes both scores counting. After 4 holes defending Hayling Champions Berryman & Field were equal leaders with Hedges & Taylor on 11 points, with 3 teams 1 point behind. The pressure of both scores counting took instant effect on the next hole with Hedges & Taylor scoring nil points, Berryman & Field only 2 points. Three teams score 7 points on a hole, with Onions scoring a nett eagle and partner slim Phillips net birdie on the 6th, while defending Champions Walton & Taberer also had a nett eagle & birdie on the 7th as did Espley and Maciver. After 9 holes Espley & Maciver were 3 points ahead of the field on 33 points. The back 9 once again proved to be tougher with Berryman & Field only scoring 1 point on the 18th as did Espley & Maciver with Walton & Taberer suffering a nil pointer! After the morning round there were 3 teams on 59 points, with Cressy & Ryan 1 point behind on 58 in high spirits having served their apprenticeship and conquered the challenge of Kangaroo Cup unique scoring format. The best round of the morning was by Couzens who shot a 3 under 32 on the back 9 to finish level par.

There were four teams scoring 6 points on one hole in the afternoon with one of these teams banking two 6 pointers! The best afternoon score was 33 points by Jackson & partner Naylor who shot level par, but they were unable to make up the 5 points’ start they had given the leaders in the morning. Couzens again played wonderful golf with a 1 over 37, setting the clubhouse lead with partner Lumley of 89 points. Hedges & Taylor had 31 points ahead of 3 others on 30. Forsythe & Simpson thought they had blown it with only 1 point on the 7th to playing partners Espley & Macivers 5 points to fall 1 point behind with 2 holes to play. Forsythe birdies the 8th with partner Simpson sinking his par putt to draw level. The final hole which is SI3 saw Forsythe & Simpson secure pars for their 2nd 6 pointer of the afternoon and take the title by 2 points. Forsythe shot a 1 under par 35 for the best round of the afternoon followed by Naylor with a level par 36. Espley & Maciver took 2nd place on count-back from Couzens & Lumley.
