After such a wonderful run of weather for the event in recent years we were due a more April showers day and the weather gods delivered. The players were spoilt to a day of true links golf with wind, rain and sunshine.
Steve Philips and Bill Onions got off to a nightmare start scoring nil points on the first two holes but the smell of food on the home stretch inspired them to score 21 points in the last 5 holes to lie in 2nd place with 58 points after the morning 18 holes. The pairing of Richard Pimbley & Roger Berry who finished 2nd in September event continued their good form and were in 3rd place with 57. Alan Paterson shot a 4 under par 31 on the back 9 holes to lead with playing partner Colin Lumley after the morning round with 59 points. Notable other morning scores were Espley & Owen both birdied the par 3 11th - alas only 1 score to count boys! Dan Berryman played his 2nd shot on the Par 3 opening hole from middle of the 18th fairway to land short of the green then chipped in for a par for 3 points. Sadly his recovery skills evaporated as the round went on.
In the afternoon round played over 9 holes, a solid start is key, which Pimbley & Berry produced with net birdies on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th then Roger Berry banked a nett albatross on the 7th hole par 5 for 5 points the most scored by any player during the day. Disaster struck on the next hole, scoring only 1 team point but normal service was resumed on the 9th for a total of 31 points winning by 6 points from three teams on 82 being David Naylor & Richard Jackson, Alan Paterson & Colin Lumley and Bill Onions with playing partner Steve Philips who was again denied holding the trophy at the end of the day.
